Donald Trump swore up and down he has no ties to Vladimir Putin or Russia, but this latest news involving his son, Donald Trump Jr., and a recent wedding tells a different story.
Allegedly, a Russian oligarch who has very close ties to Vladimir Putin dropped a large sum of money on Don Jr.’s wedding celebration, and top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), is looking into it.
Axios reports that Garcia sent letters to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and to Trump Jr. to Umar Kremlev, the Russia-based president of the International Boxing Association, who, according to ProPublica, dropped cash on a lavish May party in the Bahamas tied to Don Jr.’s nuptials.
“Oversight Democrats are investigating the numerous ways in which the Trump family has sought to enrich themselves on the basis of their proximity to President Donald Trump,” Garcia said to Wiles in his letter. In his letter to Trump Jr., Garcia said ProPublica’s reporting “may be the most serious allegation against you to date.”
According to the reporting, Kremlev’s boxing organization is financed by Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom, which has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and dropped a bag on one of the two private islands used for the event and a fireworks display, ProPublica reported.
Donald Trump Jr. Didn’t Deny Taking The Money
Trump Jr. didn’t dispute the claims but said, in a statement, that Kremlev is “a personal friend” and “not someone he has a business relationship with.”
Kremlev’s press office also chimed in, adding that he and Don Jr. have “a friendly relationship” and never discussed politics.
Don Jr.’s wife, Bettina Anderson, also chimed in, adding that it was “unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister.”
Donald Trump Played Dumb Regarding Don Jr.’s Russian-Funded Wedding
As expected, President Trump played stupid, claiming he had “no idea who Umar is” and that the Kremlin-funded gathering was a separate afterparty that he did not attend.
Garcia is also asking for all communications with Kremlev, and he has asked Don Jr. to share the guest list for the event, which also included Jared Kushner, who is currently trying to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Unfortunately, because Republicans control the entire government right now, he likely won’t get any of that information. Still, if Democrats take control after these upcoming midterm elections, Don Jr. could be in serious trouble.
