The Game is taking legal action against Universal Music Group after claiming the label failed to properly promote the release of his album, Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind.
According to court documents, the Compton rapper filed a lawsuit Universal Music Group and its subsidiary, Virgin Music Group, on Wednesday, September 30.
The lawsuit centers around an alleged $500,000 marketing budget that The Game says the label promised for the 2022 release of Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind. The rapper claims the lack of promotion contributed to the album’s low sales, while also alleging that only $179,274.79 of the promised budget was actually spent.
The Game claims $125,000 of the overall budget was supposed to be allocated toward radio promotion, but alleges that the label did not spend any money in that area. He also claims that $170,000 was budgeted for music videos, out-of-home advertising, overseas promotion, and digital marketing, but says only $88,000 was ultimately spent.
The rapper is now suing UMG for approximately $500,000 in damages, alleging a breach of contract and seeking reimbursement for his legal fees. According to the lawsuit, both UMG and Virgin Music Group have denied breaching any agreement with The Game.
